I have a 2-year-old lab with acid reflux. I am looking for a food to help that is easier to digest. I have heard no grains, low fat, and low in crude protein. I would like to not spend an arm and a leg. I already have one dog on Natural Balance. What ingredients/brands do you suggest/have available?
There are several tips and tricks for pups with acid reflux issues. I would recommend chatting with your vet about it and trying a few out. What the “fix” will be can depend a lot on the cause of your pup’s reflux. Beyond switching foods, the simplest solution is to feed less food more frequently. This means your dog’s tummy is never truly empty for very long and never overly full.
With reflux, we are typically more concerned about a protein’s digestibility than how much of it there is. If a food’s protein comes from plants, that protein is less digestible by a dog than protein from meat. Making sure your dog is eating a meat-based kibble rather than one that gets its protein from plant sources is an excellent first step. We have many wonderful foods that will fit the bill without breaking the bank, but I would recommend stopping by your local Chuck & Don’s to discuss your options with one of our associates. We are very comfortable working within a customer’s budget, so don’t hesitate to give us parameters to work within!
Dogs who frequently throw up overnight or first thing in the morning and are vomiting up nothing but water, saliva and bile, are usually having these episodes when their tummy is at its most empty. Adding a late-night snack or bedtime treat can help these pups in most cases. A good quality treat with decent protein seems to help most, so freeze-dried foods or treats, like Northwest Naturals, Primal, or Stella & Chewy’s, are a frequent recommendation.
